Join us for the 2016 Global Competence Summit to learn from industry leaders, educators, and students why a globally competent workforce is imperative, not only to support California's global competitiveness, but also to address our humanistic need for collaboration.

Evaluate your own global competence, learn best practices from educators who are implementing innovative global competence initiatives, and brainstorm innovative lesson plans and presentations with the support of other educators that you can start implementing right away.

WHO SHOULD ATTEND

The event will convene high school and community college CTE educators, career counselors, and industry leaders to promote global competence in Career Technical Education. Relevant for CTE deans, administrators, and workforce and economic development agencies as well.

COST

The event is free, but RSVP is required.

AGENDA

+ 8:30 -9am: Registration and continental breakfast
+ 9am to 3pm: Keynote, panels, speakers, innovation lab, idea swap shop, working lunch provided
+ 3pm-4pm: Wine tasting networking reception with appetizers

Keynote speaker Jennifer Manise, Executive Director of the Longview Foundation for World Affairs and International Understanding, will kick off the event. Industry panelists include: Miles Hartfeld, international biotechnology manufacturing veteran; Jim Semick, Founder and Chief Strategist, ProductPlan and part of the founding team at AppFolio; Tim Wright, Vice President, Corporate and Market Strategy, and member of the original 2002 startup team for InTouch Health; Trygve Duryea, successful serial entrepreneur, consultant and SBCC educator, who began his career at age 19 with 28 international patents and trademarks doing business in 16 countries; Claire Wineman, President of the Grower-Shipper Association of Santa Barbara and San Luis Obispo Counties

STIPEND OPPORTUNITY

Stipends are available for CTE educators and career counselors from California's South Central Coast region high schools and community colleges (SLO, Santa Barbara, Ventura, and Northwest L.A. counties) for the development of classroom activities during the event that promote global competence in your CTE pathway. Julie Samson, director, Scheinfeld Center for Entrepreneurship & Innovation, and the Center for International Trade Development. Julie also serves as Deputy Sector Navigator (DSN) under the Doing What Matters for Jobs and the Economy framework of the California State Chancellor's office.

The 2016 Global Competence Summit is an initiative of the California Community Colleges’ Doing What MATTERS for Jobs and the Economy framework which invests in California’s economic growth and global competitiveness through industry-specific partnerships, education, training and services that contribute to a highly skilled and productive workforce. The California Community Colleges is the largest system of higher education in the nation. It is composed of 72 districts and 113 colleges serving 2.1 million students per year. Community colleges supply workforce training, basic skills courses in English and math, and prepare students for transfer to four-year colleges and universities.
